Africa: Sahel Food Crisis

So tired, but I can’t sleep. I want to bring everyone’s attention to a food crisis in Africa that unfortunately hasn’t gotten a lot of media attention. This was brought to my attention from a very sweet girl named Laura who works for the Canadian Red Cross.

A locust invasion in the Sahel region in Africa and unfavourable weather conditions have left the region with a severe food crisis and malnutrition.

Here are some quick facts on the crisis:
– Almost 8 million people are currently threatened by the severe food shortages
– In Niger, the UN has found that 3.6 million of the country’s 12 million people are directly affected.
– In the Tahoua and Maradi regions, the rate of severe malnutrition is 3 and 7% respectively.
