Sit-up Bicycle Art 2

Bicycle art drawings by Mike Rubbo

Last September we held an exclusive contest here on The Urban Country to win a bicycle art painting by our friend Mike Rubbo. To win the painting, all you had to do was send a photo of yourself on your bike, and Mike would choose the winner.

Mr. Rubbo paints and draws pictures of everyday people riding sit-up style bicycles. He feels sport/racing bicycles already dominate modern bicycle art so he wanted to balance it out by focusing on utility bicycling:

“I believe that the bicycle is a fantastic presentational device for the human body and so the figure is very important in my art, as is the story behind the art.”

“I feel art can add status and cachet to an activity, that the bike often has low status in relation to the car, so I hope good art can help change the balance.”

Some time after choosing the contest winner last year, Mike proceeded to create the artwork. However, he wasn’t happy with the result, so some more time passed.

Now Mr. Rubbo has decided not only to draw the winning photograph, but he also went ahead and created drawings for all of the contestants who submitted photos for the contest.

The winning drawing can be found in Mike’s latest promotional video for his bicycle art.

See if you can spot Mike’s rendition of reader Joe Arruda from Oshawa, Canada riding with his dog Duffy among the plethora of other drawings in Mr. Rubbo’s collection.

Check out Mike’s website www.situp-bike-art.com to browse his full collection. If you are interested in hanging some bicycle art on your wall, contact Mike to make your request.
